The Philadelphia Phillies could shut down rookie pitcher Aaron Nola after his next scheduled start.
The 22-year-old has 11 starts during his rookie campaign. Nola’s 12th and potential final start of the season would be against the Marlins in Miami on Tuesday.
Nola has pitched 175 innings this season between the majors and minors and the Phillies have planned to keep him in the 180-190 range, which would make his next start possibly his last. After a great start, the right-hander had two starts of a combined 12 runs over nine innings pitched in two of his last three starts. In between those starts was seven innings with zero runs allowed. He post a 4.11 ERA, 1.20 WHIP with a 6-2 record and a 59/16 K/BB ratio over 65.2 innings pitched.
The Phillies have the worst record in MLB. Nola is one of the players that could be the foundation of the team’s future. They want to protect his arm, especially for games that don’t mean anything
