Panik (Back) Placed On 60-Day DL

The San Francisco Giants placed Joe Panik on the 60-day DL, thus ending the second baseman’s season.

In his first full MLB season, Panik was adjusting quite well. He had a .312 BA with 8 HR and 37 RBI while making his first All-Star team. He was always near the top of the NL leaders in BA. Unfortunately for him, two injuries will cost him 62 games.

Panik won’t return until 2016, and the defending World Series champions will need a miracle to get back into the postseason. The Giants currently trail the Los Angeles Dodgers by 7 1/2 games. While Kelby Tomlinson will fill the duties at second for the most part, Mac Williamson and Trevor Brown have been called up with the opportunity to get some playing time at the big league level.

Williamson, 25, has a .275/.368/.433 batting line with 13 HR at Double-A and Triple-A this season. He will get an opportunity to play outfield for the Giants.

Brown, 23, will be a backup catcher for Buster Posey. He is known more for his defense but had a .261/.319/.343 batting line with 2 HR in the minors this season.

Daniel Corbonell has been demoted to make room for both players.
