Kansas City Royals closer Greg Holland has a “significant” tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow, according to Royals manager Ned Yost.
Yost believes the injury happened over a year ago but it really took its toll on the two-time All-Star this season. The velocity on Holland’s fastball dipped dramatically from where he was at a year ago while the Royals went on a run to Game 7 in the World Series.
Greg Holland has a "significant" tear in his UCL, Ned Yost says. So Tommy John surgery is the most likely option.

The 29-year-old is scheduled to go for a second opinion next week. In all likelihood Tommy John surgery will be required, which would then wipe out his 2016 season.
Last season, Holland had a 1.44 ERA with a 1.21 ERA the season prior. He collected 93 saves over those two seasons while pitching in 121 games combined. The righty only pitched in 48 games this season because of a DL stint. He still converted 32 saves but simply wasn’t pitching like he has in the past.
