The Minnesota Twins have activated Ricky Nolasco from the 60-day DL on Friday.
The starting pitcher was originally believed to be out for the year after suffering an ankle injury on June 1. Nolasco underwent surgery on July 13 with the belief that he wouldn’t return until next season. The right-hander has been cleared to return to a Twins team that trails for the second AL Wild Card spot by 1 1/2 games.
Nolasco threw 49 pitches without any issues in an intrasquad game on Monday. Twins manager Paul Molitor said Nolasco will pitch in relief down the stretch instead of starting because it would take too much time to get his arm strength back.
"You hope your guys go consistently deep and you don't have a need because we're in pretty good shape and getting it done, but I can't tell you how good he's been accepting where he's at with what has happened with his season," Molitor told MLB.com.
