The St. Louis Cardinals failed to maintain a 3-1 lead in the top of the ninth as they allowed seven runs to the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.
Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal was brought in to for the save opportunity but couldn't convert. Instead, the right-hander allowed a grand slam to Jason Rogers, which put Milwaukee ahead of St. Louis. The Brewers tacked on three more runs for insurance.
Rosenthal put the first three runners on base before surrendering a grand slam to the pinch-hitting Rogers. Prior to the series with the Brewers, the 25-year-old All-Star only allowed one homer over 66 2/3 innings. Rosenthal allowed another homer on Saturday.
It’s a blip on the radar for what has been an excellent season for the five-year pitcher. Rosenthal holds a 2.13 ERA and 82/24 K/BB ratio over 68 2/3 innings. He's now 47-for-50 in save chances this season.
Rogers, 27, has done solid in his rookie season. Over 147 at-bats, the first baseman has a .306/.378/.456 batting line with 4 HR and 16 RBI this year.
