Week 6 Quarterback (QB) Rankings Analysis
By Zach Wilkens (@LopsidedTrades)
As a ranker, sometimes you look at your rankings after making them and you realize you don’t really differ very much at all from the consensus rankings. It’s not that I strive to make outlandish picks, but when you see that you have a guy five spots ahead of the norm it’s an easy talking point. Week 6 is one of those rather standard weeks for me. There aren’t many guys that I am more than 2-3 spots away from the consensus on. No worries though, I still have plenty of opinions on QBs this week all the same!
Let’s start with Andrew Luck. I have him at QB4, his consensus rank is QB5. I’m sure there are a lot of owners concerned about whether he can play at a high level or whether he is still an automatic start. I think he is. Prior to shutting down Brandon Weeden the Patriots had given up at least 15 fantasy points to the opposing QB in all three of their games. The Colts have plenty of weapons and if Luck is active I am very confident he’ll get the ball to them.
Another young QB who has been disappointing? Russell Wilson. He’s been a bit more under the radar, but he is only QB10 on the season after being a consensus top five QB on the season. He’s thrown for multiple touchdowns in just one game and hasn’t had the same impact as a runner either. He’s got another tough matchup against the Panthers but I still have him as my QB8. His offensive line is pretty bad but I think there is enough talent in this offense for Wilson to improve.
Tyrod Taylor is very questionable this week but I have him at QB14 if he starts. His current consensus rank is QB24 which is mostly a reflection of the uncertainty on whether he plays or not. If he starts he remains a very solid play. Taylor has had three 20+ point games and no single-digit games on the season. If E.J. Manuel is the starter I have him outside my top 25.
I am low on Philip Rivers at QB12. He’s had two straight big games with over 350 passing yards and at first glance the Packers matchup certainly seems to provide another big opportunity. A closer look shows that the Packers have been a very good defense. They haven’t allowed a single 300 yard passer and just one game over 225 passing yards. Aside from Russell Wilson the Packers haven’t faced very good QBs but I still think the defense is legit. Rivers is merely a low-end QB1 here.
