Following a promising 11-4 campaign in 2014, a blown lead and controversial non-call in the Wild Card game against Dallas, the Detroit Lions hoped to compete again in 2015. But after an 0-5 start, it's been one continuous nightmare in the Motor City. Injuries have not helped.
Starting the season with a running back by committee, Ameer Abdullah has now emerged as the number one back, but not because of his play on the field. After rushing for 50 yards in his professional debut, the rookie out of Nebraska has not topped that performance since. Although with looming injuries to Joique Bell (ankle, Achilles) and Theo Roddick (groin,) both of whom are questionable and expected to have limited roles if they play, look for Abdullah to get a lot of touches this week against the Chicago Bears.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the Lions will not reduce Abdullah's playing time, despite his recent fumble troubles. The Lions have relied heavily on Theo Riddick to catch the ball out of the backfield, and if he can't go, expect Abdullah to get targets in the air as well, an essential plus in PPR leagues. With two banged up running backs on Detroit’s depth chart, fantasy owners should not worry about Abdullah sharing the workload.
