Though it’s still up in the air as to whether or not Dallas Cowboys’ wide receiver Dez Bryant will suit up this Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, both teams are assuming he will and are planning accordingly.
In fact, there’s much speculation that Richard Sherman—arguably the league’s most dominant cornerback—will shadow Bryant throughout the entirety of the contest, should he play. Uncharacteristic of past years, Sherman has caught some flak for his team’s string of poor performances during Kam Chancellor’s absence.
While true, that doesn’t seem to have shaken the confidence other Seahawks’ players have placed in their star cornerback. Per ESPN, when asked about whether he’s in favor of Sherman having complete and total responsibility of monitoring Bryant during the Week 8 content, responded safety Earl Thomas:
“Of course. Both hands up. I think the big thing about that is it’s a clear conscience for me when he’s moving around and he’s following a No. 1 guy. That’s all I can say about that. I don’t have to worry about the No. 1 guy.”
This season, seeing as how Sherman’s already matched up against dominant wide receivers like the Bengals’ A.J. Green and 49ers’ Torrey Smith, this kind of assignment shouldn’t have Sherman feeling uncomfortable. In the case of Torrey Smith, Sherman even managed to hold him without a catch.
However, during his 5-year career, Sherman hasn’t always had the sole duty of taking the opposing team’s best receiver out of a game. Actually, more often than not, he’s lined up as true left cornerback, allowing opponents to move their best receiving weapons to the opposite side of the line, if need be. Once again, as always, Sherman’s critics have made known their disapproval.
This Sunday, Sherman will probably have his chance to silence them.
As far as fantasy owners are concerned, though Bryant is still widely considered the most talented wideout in the NFL, with a nagging foot injury and Sherman’s shadow for constant company, he can’t be considered more than a WR2 option. That said, the matchup will be a great one and promises to entertain.
