Mets Extend Murphy Qualifying Offer

National League Division and Championship Series star second baseman Daniel Murphy received a $15.8 million qualifying offer from the New York Mets, according to ESPN's Adam Rubin.

Over seven years, the 30-year-old Daniel Murphy has spent his entire major league career as a member of the Mets. He has compiled a career batting average of .288 with 62 home runs and 402 runs batted in. In 2015, Murphy hit .281/.322/.449 with 14 home runs and 73 runs batted in. But his marketing campaign can begin when the postseason started.

In his first postseason appearance, Daniel Murphy hit .333 with three home runs and five runs batted in to lead the Mets past the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series. The Mets advanced to the National League Championship Series, where they faced the Chicago Cubs and Murphy's postseason proficiency continued. Over four games, Murphy hit .529 with four home runs and six runs batted in, earning Championship Series Most Valuable Player honors. Unfortunately, Murphy's success in the postseason ended before the World Series.

The Mets second baseman managed just three hits over 20 at-bats over the five-game series where he also committed two significant errors as the Mets fell to the Royals.

Defense has never been a strong suit for the 30-year-old. From 2012 to 2014, when his primary position was second base, Murphy committed between 15 or 16 errors. Last year he only committed six errors in the field, but the lasting impression entering free agency will be the ones he made on the biggest stage in the game.

Murphy is expected to decline the qualifying offer.
