Brandon Jennings is a flashy name that may have been forgotten by many in the fantasy basketball community. After nearly a year away from the court following a devastating Achilles injury last January, Jennings comeback appears nearly complete, as he looked healthy dishing out 12 assists this weekend in a D-League tune-up, dominating the game at times. Historically, Achilles tendon injuries are some of the most difficult to come back from. Unlike other NBA stars that suffered a similar injury (most notably Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas at age 32 and Kobe Bryant at age 34), there is good news for Jennings. He is still only 26 years old, and should be able to rebound quicker than the others. More positive signs: Originally expected back December 29, the Pistons announced Sunday that Jennings has re-joined the team and could suit up as soon as Tuesday at Miami.
From a fantasy standpoint, expectations should be tempered a bit on Jennings, especially over his first few weeks back. If he is able to regain most of his old form, however, he will provide your team with a significant boost in several categories, particularly points (16.6 ppg career average), three-pointers (1.9 3pg), assists (6.2 apg), steals (1.4 spg), and free-throw percentage (80.2%).
Bottom Line: Surely, Jennings will need several games to knock off the rust, and it is unfair to expect him to resume his career numbers over the season’s final 4 months. It also doesn’t help that Reggie Jackson is having a career year for the upstart Pistons. Despite all of this, Jennings's talent, resumé and potential to contribute in multiple categories makes him worth an intriguing add that could provide huge dividends down the stretch as his comfort level on the court only strengthens.
