After two forgettable seasons with the Minnesota Twins, Chris Colabello let himself be known in a Blue Jays uniform. In only 333 at-bats last season, Colabello batted .321, hit 15 home runs and drove in 54 RBI’s. Colabello was not penciled into the lineup as often during the second half of the season but was relied on throughout Toronto’s playoff run. He will need to establish himself as an every day player, and limit his strikeouts (96 K’s in 333 AB’s) in order to reach full fantasy worth.
Colabello was able to maintain such a high average, amidst his heavy swing and miss ratio, because of his .411 batting average on balls in play. While it’s highly unlikely that he’ll come close to sustaining that production, there is still much to like about Colabello. He batted .329 with runners in scoring position and .323 at the Rogers Centre last season. He hits both righties and lefties well, and despite an abundance of strikeouts, he still makes enough contact to maintain a higher than average BABIP. Colabello shouldn’t be relied on as an every day fantasy first baseman until it is clear what his role will be. Although, he is certainly worth a pick in leagues deeper than 12 teams.
