NHL DFS Picks for Sunday, February 28th
A couple strategy notes. For cash game construction look for players who can contribute to your score when they are not providing offense. Examples are guys who take a ton of shots, defensemen who block a lot of shots(DraftKings). Also, look for guys who get powerplay time and especially Top 6 forwards. You can find value in players who join a new line due to an injury or just get a promotion and more ice time.
For large field tournaments (GPP's) you want to find payers who have multi point upside and can grab double digit fantasy points. To stack the most upside in your forwards a common strategy is to punt the defense position. This doesn't mean just grab anyone. Try and look for a D man who will be playing more PP time or might get a boost in overall playing time due to an injury.
Let's take a look at some solid plays for today's action.
Braden Holtby - Goaltender, Capitals (Draftkings - $8,700 FanDuel - $9,500)
This will be a terrific battle between top teams from each conference. Holtby beat the Blackhawks earlier in the year stopping 26 of 27 shots en route to a 4-1 victory. he makes a great play for the early slate on both sites and is also a top option on DraftKings all day slate.
Martin Jones - Goaltender, Sharks (Draftkings - $7,500 FanDuel - $8,400)
After a terrific start to the month he has struggled to a 1-2-1 record over his past four games allowing 12 goals in total. He will look to bounce back on the road Sunday in Vancouver. He has been terrific on the road this year with some odd reverse splits as he has averaged close to 2 fantasy points per game more away from the Shark Tank.
Mikael Granlund - Center, Wild (DraftKings - $4,200 FanDuel - $4,900)
Playing Granlund at Center on the early slate will allow you to pay up for either Ovechkin or Kane toady. He has a very affordable salary and has tallied seven points in his last 10 games with 28 shots on goal.
Rickard Rakell - Center, Ducks (DraftKings - $4,800 FanDuel - $6,300)
Skating on the second line with Corey Perry for the trending Ducks. He has tallied eight points (two on the PP) in his last nine games including 26 shots on goal. The Ducks have a tough matchup so a second line Ducks stack may be low owned in GPP's tonight.
Alex Ovechkin - Winger, Capitals (DraftKings - $9,100 FanDuel - $10,700)
The two top offensive options in the early slate go head to head on Sunday and while both make great plays, Ovechkin has a higher floor and ceiling. He has averaged over six shots a game in the past couple weeks and has tallied 15 points in his last 10 games. There is plenty of value making it easy to fit him in a lineup today.
Tyler Toffoli - Winger, Kings (DraftKings - $6,100 FanDuel - $5,900)
The Kings offense has been awful lately as they haven't scored more than two goals in six straight games. For this reason he could be low owned making a terrific play in GPP's. He is coming off a two point game and has eight points in his last 10 games. he also provides a very high floor as he has averaged 3.5 shots on goal per game over those 10 games.
Dmitry Orlov - Defense, Capitals (DraftKings - $3,600 FanDuel - $4,300)
To fit some of the top talent in your lineups today you are going to need plenty of value. The best place to find this value as on the point as there are few options worth paying up for. He is playing on a Top 4 role for the Caps but remains a cash game play as he isn't getting any time on the powerplay.
Brent Burns - Defense, Sharks (DraftKings - $8,100 FanDuel - $7,400)
With most of the high end plays in the early slate on Sunday it makes a viable option to pay up for a D man in GPP's Sunday night. Besides Erik Karlsson of the Sens, Burns has the most upside of any defensemen. The offensive output has been lower than usual lately with only seven points in his last 10 games but he has provided a high floor with 46 shots on goal.
