ANALYSIS: The injury bug and poor plate discipline have prevented Steven Souza, Jr. from becoming that elite power/speed combo outfielder the Washington Nationals dreamed of when they drafted him in 2007. Since being traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in 2014, the story hasn't changed. While Souza, Jr. has tallied double-digit dingers in his first two seasons with the Rays, he has also recorded strikeout rates over 30% and batting averages of .225 and .247.
However, in 2017 the script seems to have changed thus far. Souza, Jr. is currently running a 21.8 K% and a 16.4% BB%. His O-Swing% has dropped from 30.6% in 2016 to 25.4%. The improved approach has paid dividends. The righty is slashing .304/.418/.522 with a .217 ISO with two home runs and 10 runs batted in through the first 14 games of the season. Although he has yet to swipe a bag, Souza, Jr. seems to be making strides in other aspects of his game.
Of course, the season is still young, and it may be too early to tell if Souza, Jr. can keep this pace up. However, if he can stay healthy and maintain that K% under 25%, a 20/20 season could be in sight. Fantasy owners in mixed leagues of 12 teams or more should stash Souza, Jr. on their benches and monitor his approach at the dish as the season progresses.
