ANALYSIS: San Diego had an unlikely Opening Day starter in Jhoulys Chacin, who joined his fifth team in four seasons after signing with the Padres. They might have been on to something, however. Chacin used to be a pitcher to avoid at home in his early career with the Rockies, but it's a completely different story in San Diego. Chacin has pitched to a stellar 1.68 ERA and .179 BAA in 59 innings at home (nine starts). On the other side of the coin, Chacin owns a 9.08 ERA on the road in 36 2/3 innings (eight starts). While this would figure to make him a part-time streamer at best, he is starting to turn a corner. In his last five starts, Chacin has a 2.25 ERA and 1.06 WHIP with three victories. One of those was a quality start in Wrigley Field.
Should he be trusted as an every-week rotation arm? Not necessarily, but if you play the splits right and keep him available as a streamer, he can certainly help your ratios. A 7.7 K/9 isn't remarkable, but it won't hurt you too much either. If Chacin suffers a similar fate to every Padres starter from last season, he could be dealt to another team by the deadline. Depending on the landing spot, this could help or hurt his stock. For the time being, Chacin is playable in deeper mixed leagues when the matchup is right, which it has been more often than not lately.
