ANALYSIS: Mike Fiers didn't figure to be a big part of the Astros' plans this season, as several younger arms lurk in the minors to take his spot at the back end of the rotation. Instead, he has steadily improved each month, to the point that he has become one of the most consistent starters in an injury-riddled staff. The season-long stats aren't the most attractive (3.80 ERA, 1.31 WHIP), but Fiers pitched to a 2.32 ERA with a .189 BAA in five June starts. The strikeouts have picked up a bit too, with Fiers notching 31 K in his last 30 innings.
There are some concerns, naturally. Fiers could stand to walk fewer batters, with his 3.39 BB/9 higher than he's ever posted before. He's also allowed 18 HR in 16 starts, accounting for much of the damage to his ratios. His 20.7% HR/FB rate should go down, especially since he's suppressing fly balls more than he has since his rookie season, down to a league-average figure. Fiers doesn't have much of a pedigree compared to other available starters, but he is on a roll and has the benefit of playing for one of the top teams in the majors. Use him as a streaming option for the time being to extract some wins and temporary ratio help and fill any holes you might have in your rotation.
