ANALYSIS: When Sean Doolittle was traded from the A’s to the Nationals along with teammate Ryan Madson immediately after the All-Star Break, it was assumed that Madson would assume the role as closer. However, Doolittle has closed each of the two save opportunities that have arisen since he and Madson have joined the team.
While that is an encouraging sign, the results for Doolittle in those outings do raise concerns. Notably, he has allowed one run, one on which was unearned, and leadoff walks in each of his two outings. If that continues, it may be enough to cause Baker to look to Madson, especially given the fact that Doolittle likely has less leeway in the role as a left-handed pitcher. On the other hand, there has to be optimism that Doolittle will figure out his control problems considering he had walked only two batters during his time with the A’s this season and had rarely displayed control problems in previous seasons.
Given that track record, his success as a closer in the past, and the way he has been used to this point as a National, Doolittle is worth adding for any saves needy fantasy team.
