ANALYSIS: A trip to the disabled list for Aaron Altherr opened up a roster spot for Rhys Hoskins, the Phillies’ No. 6 prospect according to MLB.com. The 24-year-old was seemingly blocked at first base by Tommy Joseph, but he recently began working in the outfield and was starting for the Phillies in left field in his debut Thursday. At the time of his call-up, Hoskins led the International League with 29 homers and 91 RBI, constructing a more-than-respectable .284/.385/.581 slash line in the process.
Hoskins doesn’t run much, but he could be a four-category contributor at the next level, especially in OBP leagues. His skillset doesn’t exactly mirror that of Ryan Howard, but he has the potential to be the next great power hitter for the Phillies. As the wave of talented hitting prospects continues to pour in for Pete Mackanin’s club, Hoskins should quickly move up in the batting order, and a little major league experience should allow him to start driving the ball out of big league ballparks. Consider adding the young slugger in NL-only and deeper mixed formats.
