Mike Montgomery Looking To Keep Arm Healthy In 2018
7 years agoSpeaking to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Cubs pitcher Mike Montgomery spoke about how he would like to keep his arm healthy even if he is not a starter. Montgomery started 2017 as a reliever before switching to a starter and then back going back to the bullpen. Overall, Montgomery had a solid year, however, not having a clear role took a toll on his arm. Montgomery stated that he does want to be a starting pitcher at some point but that he enjoys his role as the team's swingman because “being in a unique role is something I take pride in.” There were multiple reports earlier in the week that Montgomery will be stretched out as a starting pitcher, but unless the Cubs decide to operate a six-man rotation, his best bet will be a role similar to last season. There is also the possibility that the left-hander could be dealt at some point and enter another team's rotation. Montgomery has some appeal if he is dealt or an injury happens to a Cubs starter, but for now it’s to leave him off your radar.
