Alex Wood Now Throwing Out Of The Stretch
7 years agoLos Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told Andy McCullough of the L.A. Times that starting pitcher Alex Wood is throwing out of the stretch more this spring in order to "simplify his delivery." The move is undoubtedly designed to increase Wood's longevity after losing gas down the stretch last season. He broke out in 2017 by punching out 151 batters in 152 1/3 innings while posting the lowest walk rate of his career (2.2 walks per nine innings). But his velocity dropped and his underlying numbers were mostly buoyed by his strong first half. Injuries are also a concern with Wood, but if he can maintain anything approximating his first-half numbers over a full season, he could leap into the top-20 conversation.
