J.D. Martinez's Contract Has Opt-Outs And Protection
7 years agoOutfielder J.D. Martinez and the Boston Red Sox have officially signed the agreed-upon contract of five years and $110 million. According to Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston, the contract was delayed by a medical issue in 2017 -- a sprained Lisfranc ligament in right foot -- and he has three opt-outs as well as protection for the Red Sox in case of injuries. Martinez has opt-out options after years two, three and four. The Red Sox have protection if he sustains injuries relating to the old Lisfranc injury. The Red Sox can opt out after Year 3 if he spends 60 days on disabled list. The team can also opt out after Year 3 if he spends 10 days on the DL in Year 3 plus a combined 120 days on the DL in years two and three. The Red Sox also have an opt-out option after Year 4 if Martinez suffers a Lisfranc injury related to his prior injury. A three-doctor system will define if the injury is related to his prior Lisfranc injury. Another justification of the post-Year 4 opt-out is if it is due to an old injury, Martinez spends 60 days on DL in Year 4 — or 10 days or more in Year 4, plus a total of 120 DL days in Year 3 and Year 4. All parties agree that the prior injury is not an issue. This type of contract just gives all parties reassurances.
