Ryan Rua Draws the Start in Left on Opening Day
7 years agoAs expected, Texas Rangers outfielder Ryan Rua will start in left field when they take the field against the defending World Series champions from Houston on Opening Day. As exciting as it must be for the 28-year-old, Rua is the dictionary definition of a replacement player and is simply keeping top prospect Willie Calhoun's seat warm until such a time that his service-time delay is complete. Rua is neither an effective defender nor particularly skilled at the plate. He strikes out too much and doesn't generate enough power despite his stout frame. Unfortunately, his spring did little to dispel concerns. Rua will serve as organizational depth once Calhoun is brought up.
