7 years agoIt’s been a long, painful road for New York Mets starting pitcher Zack Wheeler, but if he can pitch like he did on Wednesday against the Miami Marlins, it will all be worth it. Wheeler hurled seven innings in his 2018 debut, allowing one earned run on two hits and a walk with seven strikeouts, settling for a no-decision after the Mets couldn’t pick up a hit until the seventh inning. The run came on a first-inning home run by Miguel Rojas, and that was it. Wheeler finished up the night by retiring the last 16 hitters he faced. It may have been the lowly Marlins, but Wheeler’s fastball command seemed to be far improved than the Wheeler we used to see leaving them cleanly over the plate to get smashed. With starting pitcher Jason Vargas set to return to the rotation soon, Wheeler may not get more than even one more start, but if he pitches like this again, the Mets will have a good problem on their hands.--John Smith
