ANALYSIS: Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Trevor Cahill appears to be back to his old tricks. In 2017, before getting shelled after a trade to the Royals, he had a 3.69 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 61 innings for the Padres. Since moving to the Athletics this season, Cahill has a 3.00 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 18 innings pitched.
He has allowed just 13 hits and has reinvented himself as a strikeout pitcher over the last few seasons. Even including his dismal time period with Kansas City (where he had an 8.22 ERA in 23 innings pitched), Cahill has struck out 8.9 batters per nine in 211 innings pitched since 2015. While this includes playing for five different teams (and a strong stint as a reliever with the Cubs), Cahill has shown that he is able to strike batters out and he did allow just 49 hits in 65 2/3 innings with the Cubs in 2016.
He will start on May 5 against a struggling Orioles lineup that could put him in line for another quality start. He should start next weekend against the Yankees (far from a great spot), but he did have five strikeouts in six innings against the Astros on April 29 (allowing three earned runs on just four hits), showing that he can perform against top teams.
