ANALYSIS: Cincinnati Reds outfielder Scott Schebler was a surprise in 2017 when he slugged 30 home runs, but he has been even better in a lot of ways this season. He has six extra-base hits in just 56 at-bats this season (slugging .518) and has a .304 batting average, much better than the .233 clip that he posted in 2017.
A late bloomer who had just 322 plate appearances coming into 2017, the 27-year-old Schebler has seen his hard hit ball rate dip a bit from 39.4% to 38.8% this season, but his soft hit ball rate has dropped five percent (19.3% to 14.3%). He has also hit more ground balls (51%), but his ability to hit the ball harder has lead to his BABIP going from .248 to .304. While there is a lot to ask in terms of walks (7.7% BB rate in 2017 to 3.3% this season), he has bounced back well from an elbow injury from earlier this season.
It appears that some owners have been slow to pick him up after coming back from his injury, but Schebler could have OF3 upside in deeper formats. Matchups against the Mets and Dodgers this week are not outstanding, but injuries with both contenders could lead to some ideal matchups.
