Willie Calhoun Hitting Well With Little Power at Triple-A
7 years agoTexas Rangers' outfielder and top prospect Willie Calhoun has been hitting well over the last 10 games, to the tune of .316 with just four strikeouts and two walks over 38 at-bats. Calhoun's season line of .260/.322/.382 is fine, but certainly less impressive than what was expected from the 23-year-old in 2018. The power outage is particularly concerning, with just three home runs and a season ISO of a below-average .126, a dramatic drop from last season's 31 dingers and .268 ISO. Calhoun's calling card is his bat, as he brings incredible bat-to-ball skills, with very good strikeout rates for a power hitter. At maturity, he's a legitimate threat for a .300 batting average with 30 home runs. He's been picking things up recently with more extra base hits and a seven game hitting streak. Calhoun's early season slump could be explained by frustration about his demotion, but he'll need to pick up the pop if he's hoping to force a promotion before July. That said, even then, the out-of-contention Rangers may opt to keep him down as long as they can. Calhoun is still a top-tier asset in dynasty and keeper leagues, but redrafts may have to choose between holding him until July or trading to get an asset in the short-term.
