ANALYSIS: Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Ryan Tepera was assumed to be the closer in Toronto after Roberto Osuna went on the restricted list, but did not win the job right away. Tyler Clippard was the closer for the Blue Jays over the last few weeks, but now it appears that Tepera is the man to end games north of the border.
Tepera earned two saves last week and was 2-0 with two saves and two holds in May. He had 13 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings last month, but did allow runs in three of his last five appearances and allowed two home runs in May. An elevated walk rate (seven) has led to problems for Tepera and his 71.4% strand rate shows that he has been unlucky, especially considering his 31.6% soft hit ball rate.
The Blue Jays do not have a stable option at closer, but it appears that Tepera is the flavor of the week for Toronto. He will have a chance to grab the role for a while as well, considering that there is not a timeline for Osuna's return from suspension.
