6 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals catcher Carson Kelly was optioned to Triple-A Memphis, as starting pitcher Carlos Martinez and catcher Yadier Molina were both activated from the disabled list on Tuesday. Kelly was filling in for Molina, but he saw the short end of the stick when it came to playing time. Francisco Pena was definitely the more successful of the two backup catchers. He played eight more games in May than Kelly. Kelly had a terrible .087 average, while Pena was at .254. Kelly only had two hits compared to Pena's 15 hits in the month of May. Pena also caught Michael Wacha's near no-hit game. He has gained the confidence of his teammates and will continue to fill in as the Cardinals give Molina days off.--Blake Sullivan
