Redskins Counting On Young Line To Lead Defense's Resurgence
6 years agoThe Washington Redskins are counting on defensive linemen Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne to be difference makers on that side of the ball this year. Last season, the Redskins ranked 27th in scoring defense and dead last in rushing defense. But the former first-round picks and University of Alabama products are the main reason that the Redskins defense is expected to be much improved. Allen, the No. 17 overall selection in 2017, recorded 10 tackles and one sack before his season ended prematurely with a foot injury. Payne, who the Redskins took with the 13th overall selection in this year's draft, demonstrated that he is capable of being a disruptive force during training camp and the preseason. While the youngsters, along with third-year pro Matt Ioannidis, anchor the defensive front, the Redskins also have several other quality defensive players such as linebacker Zach Brown, cornerback Josh Norman and free safety D.J. Swearinger. The Redskins defense is an excellent streaming choice for their Week 1 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. And if the front seven produces like they are projected to, the Redskins could finish with a top-10 defense.
