ANALYSIS: There was a fair amount of helium regarding Spencer Turnbull after it was announced he would get the No. 3 starter job in Detroit following an excellent spring training (1.80 ERA, 15/2 K/BB ratio). While his first start wasn't great (5.0 IP, 3ER, 5K, 2BB) he still didn't look too bad, and he displayed some intriguing strikeout potential.
Turnbull posted a 6.06 ERA in four appearances with Detroit last season, although that came with considerably better peripherals (2.85 FIP, 21.7 K%, 5.8 BB%). He has an excellent fastball and a sharp slider, and while some project him as a future reliever he has made the most of his time in the rotation. His command his top notch, as he actually finished well above the league average in hitting the corner last season.
At the very least, Turnbull should be considered a top-notch streamer against weaker hitting opponents, particularly at home. In AL-only leagues or deeper formats, he should be picked up before someone else discovers him.
