Sergio Romo Registers First Save Of The New Year
6 years agoMiami Marlins relief pitcher Sergio Romo pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout in the 3-0 win over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday to pick up his first save of the year. Thanks to Sandy Alcantara providing eight scoreless innings of baseball, the Marlins were set up perfectly for a save. Wei-Yin Chen came out to start the ninth, but he gave up a hit and a walk and failed to record a single out before Romo made it look easy with two runners on base. The Marlins have deemed that they are a closer-by-committee, which is why Chen came out to begin the ninth. However, Romo's performance surely gives Marlins manager Don Mattingly some confidence that he can be trusted to close in save situations. Until Romo starts getting saves consistently or is officially named closer, he's best kept for deeper formats only.
