6 years agoPittsburgh Pirates shortstop Kevin Newman will make his third start of the season and hit eighth on Monday against the Cubs. Fellow shortstop Erik Gonzalez gets the day off, as he has just four hits in the early going. Newman recorded his first career walk-off hit on Saturday and has two runs batted in over just eight plate appearances this year. Also starting in left field is Pablo Reyes, giving rookie Jason Martin a day off after two consecutive starts. Reyes has just one hit in nine plate appearances. Facing off against the veteran lefty Jon Lester isn't a great matchup for these young Bucs on Monday, but it's worth paying attention to Newman, who is trying to play his way into the everyday shortstop role.--Steve Janik - RotoBaller
