A Five-Run Third Inning Dooms Nathan Eovaldi
6 years agoBoston Red Sox starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi held Toronto scoreless through the opening two frames before a five-run, third-inning outburst by the Blue Jays. He was able to calm down and finish out five innings, scattering six hits while striking out and walking four apiece. It started out solid for the 29-year-old, inducing double plays to end both the first and second innings. However, third inning went off the rails with two outs, as he served up a three-run and two-run shot, giving Toronto the 5-0 lead. It was by no means a smooth outing for Eovaldi, as he allowed a walk or hit in every inning, including the two long balls. Luckily the Sox won in walk-off fashion, so he wasn't dealt the loss. He'll need to limit big innings in the future if he wants to turn his season around, including his next start which is headed for Yankee Stadium on Tuesday.
