ANALYSIS: With 14 Saves but an ERA north of six, Wade Davis doesn't exactly have a hammerlock on Colorado's closing job. And right there breathing down his neck, is Scott Oberg having a career-year with a 1.35 ERA and 27.8% K-rate. Oberg's overall numbers are great but he's really turned it on since the beginning of May, giving up only a total of three earned runs since he gave up two at home against Arizona on May fifth. Over that stretch of 27 appearances, Oberg has 0.87 ERA in 31 innings with a 32.2% K-rate, along with a four and one record.
He may not have the closing job yet but even without it, Oberg has value, with a high enough usage rate and strong enough skill set to make him valuable in ratio categories, as well as strikeouts. And if the Rockies ever grow tired of Wade Davis and his seeming desire to occasionally burn down the mound, then Oberg could be a top-10 closer through the rest of the season.
