ANALYSIS: To own Anthony DeSclafani is to know the rollercoaster; sometimes he gives up one run and strikes out eight, sometimes he walks four and gives up two home runs. Why? Because "Disco" DeSclafani likes to party, that's why. But also because he sometimes completely loses his command and hangs up curveballs to be smashed into oblivion. But the advantage of this rollercoaster is that regardless of everything else, a steady stream of strikeouts can usually be counted on, with DeSclafani holding a 9.5 K/9 over his 114 innings pitched this year.
DeSclafani lines up for two starts this week, with the more difficult matchup coming first when the Reds visit Washington on Monday, who are leading the NL Wildcard race and who only have a 19.2% K-rate against right-handed pitching since July 1. Next up are the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday, a team DeSclafani has already faced four times this year. While he gave up four runs in four innings in their first meeting, DeSclafani has dominated the Redbirds in his three starts since, giving up only two runs in 17 innings, while striking out 24 batters. Most recently, he beat the Cardinals at home on July 21, striking out 11 batters over six innings, and giving up only one run.
