5 years agoToronto Maple Leafs goalie Michael Hutchinson earned the backup role out of camp, beating out Michael Neuvirth to be Frederik Andersen's number two. His first test was a big one, playing against the rival Montreal Canadiens on Hockey Night in Canada and he didn't do too much to impress Leafs Nation. After breaking out to a 4-1 lead in the third period, Hutchinson allowed four unanswered goals, eventually losing 6-5 in a shootout. Hutchinson would allow five goals on 42 shots, which could also show some defensive problems for the Maple Leafs, including three shorthanded goals. While the defense didn't do him any favors, the role of a successful backup is to give their team a chance to win, and allowing six goals every game won't do that. If the shaky play continues, the Leafs could explore other options as they try to limit Andersen's starts this season. --Nate Duffett
