4 years agoPittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Chris Archer (neck, shoulder) will miss the entire 2020 season after undergoing surgery to relieve symptoms of neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome. This is a surprise announcement, as Archer wasn't reported to be having any issues before spring training was canceled in March. However, he did finish the 2019 season on the injured list after experiencing shoulder discomfort in late-August, and this surgery points to that discomfort never having completely dissipated. Archer struggled mightily in his first full year as a Pirate, finishing with a 5.19 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. With just a 247 ADP in NFBC leagues, Archer hadn't gotten much respect from drafters but had emerged as a low-risk flyer due to his strikeout upside. While expected to be ready for the 2021 season, it likely won't be for the perennially cash-strapped Pirates, who hold an $11 million team option on the 31-year-old.--Nicklaus Gaut - RotoBaller
