4 years agoNew York Mets third baseman/outfielder Jeff McNeil is out of Wednesday’s lineup against the Nationals and right-hander Max Scherzer with what McNeil himself as described as a “very minor” intercostal strain. McNeil’s absence will be his third straight, paving the way for J.D. Davis to hold down the hot corner. A key cog at the top of the New York batting order, McNeil has opened 2020 with a consistent stroke that has produced a .343 average. Early returns are promising in the wake of his All-Star campaign last season, as McNeil has already delivered a 151 OPS+ in 10 games. His next chance to return to the lineup comes Friday at home against Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara, whom he has collected six hits against in his career.--Jesse Borek
