Luis Guillorme Continues His Hot Hitting
4 years agoNew York Mets second baseman Luis Guillorme went 3-for-3 with a walk and one RBI in the Mets' 6-5 loss to the Phillies on Friday. Guillorme, starting at second base with Robinson Cano serving as the designated hitter, now boasts a .474 batting average in 19 at-bats in 2020. Prior to 2020, Guillorme was a career .222 major league hitter with just one home run and nine RBI over three part-time seasons in 151 plate appearances. Despite his poor historic production in the majors, he put up a .289/.368/.350 line in 2,249 at-bats over six minor league levels. Additionally, in 2019, Guillorme broke out in Triple-A with a .307 average and .412 OBP with seven HR and 32 RBI in 228 at-bats. Given his hot hitting and 2019 breakout, conventional wisdom would suggest the Mets play both Guillorme and Andres Gimenez at second base and shortstop, respectively, on a regular basis. Guillorme is far superior to Cano on defense and, together with Gimenez, would fortify the Mets' suspect infield defense. That said, the Mets are unlikely to sit the struggling Amed Rosario or the veteran Cano. Guillorme is worth picking up in NL-Only leagues for his potential in the batting average and runs categories. Just note that there is no real road to consistent playing time for Guillorme while Cano and Rosario remain healthy and on the roster.
