4 years agoNew York Mets relief pitcher Edwin Diaz blew his third save in four attempts on the season in the Mets' 5-4 win over Miami on Wednesday. In 1/3 inning pitched, Diaz allowed two inherited runners to score which were both charged to Justin Wilson. Diaz walked two, including walking in the tying run, and allowed one hit before being removed from the game due to leg cramps. It does not appear that his leg issue is serious or will result in a stint on the injured list. After converting his first save attempt of the season, Diaz has now blown three straight, including walking in the tying run in his last two save opportunities. With Seth Lugo joining the Mets' starting rotation indefinitely, Diaz, Dellin Betances, Brad Brach, and Jeurys Familia are the remaining closer options in the Mets' bullpen. Looking at his strikeout rate and ERA, Diaz has been the most effective pitcher of the four, but he has proven to be an ineffective closer for the Mets due to a horrific 5.7 walk rate over nine innings and a brutal 1.55 WHIP. With only 31 games remaining on the schedule, the Mets can not afford to continue to permit Diaz to blow save opportunities and then pray the offense bails them out. It is likely that manager Luis Rojas will go to a full committee with Lugo now locked into the starting rotation. Unless the Mets make a trade prior to the deadline, look for Betances, Brach, and Familia to potentially see save opportunities, with some chances thrown Diaz's way, for the remainder of the season--Nick Ritrivi - RotoBaller
