Yu Darvish Reclaims Cy Young Form By Limiting Contact
4 years agoChicago Cubs right-handed pitcher Yu Darvish has pitched like one of the game’s premier aces this season, having delivered a 310 ERA+ through his first seven starts. It’s not just his traditional statistics that paint the picture that Darvish has reentered the Cy Young conversation, it’s the fact that his Statcast metrics enhance that picture. Batters are swinging and missing a gaudy 35.5% of the time against Darvish this year, and even when they do make contact, it’s a hard hit ball just 27.4% of the time, which is down more than 10 percentage points from where he sat in 2019. His next start comes Friday against the Cardinals, whom he held to one run in six innings earlier this year. His DFS value figures to be immense, but getting the start at Wrigley Field where he has compiled a 0.93 WHIP this year makes him a commodity that might be in too prime of a position to ignore.
