4 years agoNew York Mets right-handed relief pitcher Edwin Diaz threw a scoreless inning of work on Thursday in the Mets' 10-6 win over the Phillies. Diaz's inning of work was not without drama, though, as he loaded the bases in the ninth inning by walking two and hitting a batter. His control issues, however, could be excused by the fact he was working for a third night in a row. Diaz struck out two batters upping his total number of strikeouts to an absurd 47 Ks in 22 innings pitched. Diaz, who has had difficulty in the closer role dating back to 2019, including converting only four saves in seven opportunities this season, has been virtually unhittable of late. Notwithstanding his closer issues, Diaz remains an elite relief option in all formats. He can provide strikeouts and solid ratios down the stretch and contribute a save or two before the season ends. Note, though, that having pitched three straight games, the Mets will likely look to Miguel Castro for any save opportunity that arises on Friday or Saturday against the Braves.--Nick Ritrivi - RotoBaller
