4 years agoNew York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk, and drove in three runs in the Mets' 5-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday. Coming into the game, Alonso had been in a 2-for-34 slump. Tuesday's game exemplified precisely why managers must remain patient with Alonso for the final few games of the season. Despite his slump, Alonso was capable of breaking out without warning, which is what happened on Tuesday against Blake Snell of all pitchers. Coming off of an incredible rookie campaign in 2019, it was anticipated that there would be some regression for Alonso in 2020. It was not, however, expected that Alonso would struggle as much as he has. Overall, Alonso has posted a .209/.306/.435 line with 13 home runs and 30 RBI. As the season comes to an end, managers are encouraged to keep Alonso active. Perhaps Tuesday's breakout will jump start Alonso to a hot finish over the Mets' final five games of 2020.--Nick Ritrivi - RotoBaller
