Phillies Have Expressed Interest In Jake Odorizzi
4 years agoThe Philadelphia Phillies have checked in on free-agent starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. The Angels, Red Sox, and others are also reportedly in the mix to sign the veteran righty. Injuries limited Odorizzi to 36 2/3 lackluster innings last season, but he was an All-Star in 2019 and still has a lot to offer entering his age-31 campaign. In 2019, Odorizzi pitched to a 3.51 ERA supported by a 3.89 xERA and a .233 xBA. He set a new career-high with a 27.1 percent strikeout rate thanks to increased usage on his splitter that earned more swings on pitches outside the strike zone. If Odorizzi were to join Philadelphia, Vince Velasquez and Spencer Howard would compete for the fifth-starter job with the other likely starting the season in relief.
