ANALYSIS: The Grizz welcomed Grayson Allen back to their starting lineup last Wednesday, and all he did was put on a serious dud. De'Anthony Melton, on the other hand, had a sound game in which he finished with a 13-10-6-2 dub-dub, hit a triple, committed only 1 TO, and did all that in just 23 minutes of playing time coming off the bench. Are we sure Memphis won't turn to Melton to take on starting duties over Allen?
Melton is not a one-hit-wonder, don't get that wrong. He's been playing fantastic basketball all season long as a reserve (only one start in 25 games) and averaging an über-efficient 1.07 FP/min (the league average is at just 0.90). Just in the month of March, Melton has raised that average to 1.22 points and he's had five games scoring 20+ FP (two of those ended with Melton at 40 FP too).
While Melton's minutes are definitely low at just 21 MPG, he's making the most of them and truly forcing Memphis into considering him as a guy to put in starting lineups. From Feb. 26 through Wednesday Melton's played nine games while averaging an 11-3-3-2 line in that span. He's shooting 50+ percent from the floor in March, keeping turnovers mostly at bay, and scoring treys with gusto (almost 2 3PG since Feb. 26).
