Detroit Tabs Matthew Boyd To Make Opening Day Start
4 years agoDetroit Tigers left-handed pitcher Matthew Boyd has been announced as the team's starting pitcher for Opening Day on April 1 against Cleveland. Boyd is earning his second OD gig, looking to rebound from a disastrous 2020 campaign that saw him allow the most earned runs (45) and home runs (15) of any starter in the Majors. While Boyd has never delivered an ERA below 4.39 over the course of a full season, his strikeout numbers (11.6 K/9) from 2019 give him season-long viability in some formats. Many of Boyd's Statcast metrics do not portend to an immediate about-face to begin '21, but his unquestioned status as Detroit's No. 1 starter bodes well for chances of making a full allotment of starts this season so long as he stays healthy.
