Hector Neris Named Phillies Closer
4 years agoPhiladelphia Phillies relief pitcher Hector Neris was named the team's closer by manager Joe Girardi. Neris is the longest-tenured reliever in the Philly bullpen and has had success in the role before racking up 26 saves in 2017 and 28 saves in 2019. Neris - along with the entire Phillies bullpen - struggled mightily in 2020 prompting the team to acquire Archie Bradley, Jose Alvarado, and Brandon Kintzler this offseason. The presence of other former closers certainly puts Neris's job security on thin ice, but fantasy managers can confidently add Neris as a saves source early in the season. Throw in a career 30.1 percent strikeout rate and a sub-four ERA in five straight seasons and Neris becomes a must-roster reliever in all leagues as long as he has the job.
