Reese McGuire, Breyvic Valera Pass Through Waivers
4 years agoToronto Blue Jays catcher Reese McGuire and infielder Breyvic Valera both cleared waivers and were assigned outright to the club's alternate training site. The players had been designated for assignment at the end of the spring as both were out of minor league options. Retaining McGuire helps ensure the club has sufficient upper-level catching depth to weather an injury at the MLB level to either Danny Jansen or Alejandro Kirk. The club also recently acquired veteran minor league catcher Juan Graterol from the Los Angeles Angels. McGuire, 26, is known as a glove-first backstop and he hit just .073 last season in 19 games. Valera, 29, has 54 games of MLB experience but he has a career 62 wRC+.
