4 years agoMinnesota Twins starting pitcher Jose Berrios didn't have his best stuff but still earned the victory in a 13-4 defeat of the Royals. Berrios pitched six innings, allowing four runs on six hits with nine strikeouts compared to one walk. The 26-year-old only made two real mistakes- a three-run homer allowed to Hunter Dozier and an RBI double to Whit Merrifield. Berrios got plenty of run support from the Twins' lineup to effectively minimize those mistakes, but the strikeout stuff was still on full display, as he generated 19 whiffs on 95 pitches. Through five outings, Berrios ranks among the top-35 starting pitchers in wins, ERA, strikeouts, and WHIP and has been the best pitcher on the Twins' staff with the struggles of Kenta Maeda. Up next is a favorable matchup against the Tigers on May 7. They've posted the worst strikeout rate in the majors.--Tim Capurso
