David Peterson Hits Roadblock In Fifth Inning
4 years agoComing off a strong start against the Tampa Bay Rays on May 14, New York Mets starting pitcher David Peterson came out of the gate strong against the Braves on Wednesday evening. Peterson pitched four scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out five before the wheels fell off in the fifth inning. Peterson yielded four hits, three earned runs, a walk, and hit a batter in the fifth before he was pulled from the game after only 62 pitches. The Mets would go on to lose 5-4, though Peterson did not factor into the decision. He now owns a 4.97 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, and a 46:14 K:BB on the season over 38 innings pitched. Wednesday's start was a microcosm of Peterson's season. He has flashed brilliance in some starts, mixed with mediocre outings fueled by breakdown innings. As a result, Peterson is a risky streaming option. Fantasy managers that have room to roster him should do so. That said, unless desperate for innings in deeper or NL-only formats, managers may wish to keep him on the bench until he can iron out his inconsistency and string together a couple of back-to-back quality starts. He is next scheduled to face the Rockies at home next Tuesday or Wednesday.
