3 years agoWhile Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has yet to name a starting quarterback for Week 1, Jeff Howe of The Athletic notes that the job will likely go to Cam Newton. The 32-year-old started all three preseason games and played alongside the first-team offense during Sunday's preseason finale. Meanwhile, all of rookie Mac Jones's reps on Sunday came with the second-string unit. "If Belichick wanted to give off the appearance that this were still an open competition, Jones almost certainly would have gotten some work with the starting offense," writes Howe. There is never a sure thing when it comes to the Patriots' legendary coach, who is unafraid to go against the grain when making decisions.
